Clipart and photoshop

Photoshop ArtPhotoshop Art During your creative process you occasionally may find the need for clipart. There are dozens of commercial programs that offer clipart or you can download it from many sites on the internet.  In many cases clipart will have your subject matter placed on a solid background.

This may be fine if you are printing on the same color as the background, such as a white piece of paper with a white background.  Or you may be placing the clipart on a white background on a webpage. This can create a distracting problem, say if you are printing on a colored sheet of paper (or a colored webpage) and your subject's background is a different color. In the example above, The JPEG clipart image of the elephant has a white background and the project was to the displayed on a brown background.

We can set our elephant free of his distracting background pretty easily.

  1. Load your clipart into photoshop
  2. Duplicate your image
  3. Select your image with the magic wand tool
    • You may have to use another selection tool if the image contrast is low or if you have a complex background
  4. Turn off your background layer
  5. Make sure that you have the duplicated layer selected
  6. Hit the delete key and you will see the transparent background
  7. The final (and important) step is to save your image as a PNG file. This format supports transparent backgrounds whereas JPEG images do not (See second image above).

As you can see, we have set our elephant free and it can now be placed on any background color without the distracting background! The link below will walk you step by step through this process.
